Apple announced three new Mac models on Tuesday including the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and Mac mini desktop computer, to be powered by its new-generation M1 chip. This chipset is Apple’s first ARM-based chip which brings improved performance and better battery life to its personal computers. These computers look exactly like the previous MacBook launched earlier this year with a major change in the internals and slight change on the outside, But Apple says this laptop isn’t an upgrade. It’s a breakthrough.

According to  Apple, this chip delivers incredible performance, custom technologies, and revolutionary power efficiency. And it was designed from the very start to work with the most advanced desktop operating system in the world, macOS Big Sur.

Design / Display

The MacBook Air has the previous model to thank for its design. Apple is not so focused on the design, hence, they make do with the earlier launched variant with just slight changes on the keyboard and po rtability of the laptop.

The Apple MacBook Air sports a wedge-shaped design crafted using metal material. It is slightly wider than its predecessor and has a fanless design unlike the MacBook Pro that features an active cooling system to keep things cool. This is a first time design for Apple to do away with the fan. According to Apple, the macBook Air’s all-aluminum industrial design acts as a giant heat sink, or passive cooling, to keep the chips running optimally. This makes the laptop the most quiet Apple laptop ever with great user experience.

Apple also makes some noticeable changes on the keyboard. The company has switched some of the function keys that run along the top of the numerical keys. These act as shortcuts to commonly-used system features, like adjusting the screen brightness and volume.

Apple has added shortcuts for Spotlight (the universal search bar that can search for documents, apps, contacts, as well as launch web searches and calculate simple maths problems), Do Not Disturb, and Dictation, replacing the shortcut for Launchpad.

Furthermore, Apple has also included the newest standard, USB4, which delivers up to a whopping 40Gbps in data transfer rates. The dual Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports are located on the left side and a headphone jack on the right side of the laptop. This Laptop is available in gold, silver and space gray colour.

The Apple MacBook Air (M1) version also maintain the 13.3-inch retina display with IPS screen technology that delivers beautiful, high-res images and utilizes the P3 color gamut, thus, supporting millions of colors at a native resolution of 2560×1600.

Performance

The new Apple MacBook Air runs on the 8-core M1 processor, which Apple claims is 3.5x faster than the Intel-based MacBook Air launched earlier this year. The eight cores of the first-generation of the M1 chip are made up of 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores. Apple claims that its high‑performance core is the world’s fastest CPU core when it comes to low‑power silicon. This laptop is also back up by either a 7-Core GPU or 8-Core GPU variant of the M1 chip which Apple said is 6x faster GPU. Its offering 2.6 TFLOPs of FP32 throughput.

Furthermore, the M1 chip also offers up to 15x faster machine learning (ML) capabilities and supports Apple’s 16-core Neural Engine, a custom image signal processor (ISP) for improved visualization and optics. This processor helps improves camera image quality with better noise reduction, greater dynamic range and improved auto white balance, and ML-enhanced face detection to offer the best picture results.

The MacBook Air (M1) also offers 8GB or 16GB RAM option with a 256GB (only available on the 7-Core M1 version), 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB of SSD storage options.

Above all, this laptop runs on the latest macOS “Big Sur,” hence, users get access to the biggest collection of apps ever for Mac and higher frame rates for games. Thanks to the M1 chip, the laptop can also offer battery life up to 2x longer than before.

Apple MacBook Air (M1) price starts at around 420,000 naira in Nigeria.
