Xiaomi has introduced the Black Shark Helo Gaming smartphone a few days ago in an event in China. The phone was available for pre-orders on Xiaomi’s Chinese website and the release date was supposed to be November 10, but surprisingly, the device went for its first sale earlier today.
The device has the flagship SD 845 SoC, liquid cooling coupled with 6GB/8GB + 128GB and 10GB RAM + 256GB storage options. It runs on Android 8.1 Oreo, retains the 4000mAh battery with quick charge 3, while there is a vertically aligned (16MP + 20MP) camera on the back of the phone.
Xiaomi has embraced the LED setup with the Black Shark Helo by incorporating LED strips on the side of the device to accompany the logo on the rear of the device that sees a metal frame with a patterned glass rear.
The device has a 6.01-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display replacing the LCD panel on the older version with 18:9 aspect ratio and 2.5D curved glass. The Black Shark Helo still has a notch-less design, with a resolution of 2,160 x 1,080. The phone measures 160.0 x 75.25 x 8.7 mm and weighs 190 grams.
The Black Shark Helo has also made a switch from the home button enabled fingerprint scanner to a rear fingerprint scanner, as well as a switch from a single gamepad to two gamepad attachments for either side of the device.
As is the case with the original device, the Black Shark Helo uses an Iris mobile video processor from Pixelworks to deliver picture quality enhancements. But the Pixelworks team has also added the ability to upscale SDR content to HDR, much like the Nokia 7.1. The jury is out on whether the tech produces great results, but hopefully we can put it to the test soon.
Xiaomi Black Shark Helo is powered by the Qualcomm 10nm Snapdragon 845 processor and features up to 10GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage depending on the configuration. However, the Black Shark Helo was launched in three variants – 6GB RAM + 128GB Storage, 8GB RAM + 128GB Storage, and 10GB RAM+ 256GB Storage.
The Black Shark Helo sports a 20-megapixel and 12-megapixel dual camera on the rear with Phase-detection Autofocus features. This is accompanied by a 20-megapixel camera on the front of the device. As with most devices in 2018, the software sees an artificial intelligence enhancement that will recognize scenes and automatically adjust the camera settings for the environment, lighting conditions, and if it thinks you’re taking a selfie.
There’s no arguing that this device is a powerhouse with a 4000mAh battery. It comes complete with an 18W charger, so if you do run out of juice, a quick charge should get you back online in no time.
The device also features dual front-facing speakers and a dual pipe liquid-cooling system that is aimed at maintaining performance, even when playing intensive games.
