Top 5 foldable phones to expect in 2019

The advance rate in technology has brought about many mobile companies advancement towards the era of Foldable smartphone which will follow the trend of foldable technologies. Every year mobile companies release a new device with different specifications to continue their company mobile trend.

2018 is nearing the middle, smartphone companies are already testing, building and deliberating on which phone to launch in the upcoming year 2019.  Some Company shows a teaser of what to expect.

Big players like Apple, Samsung, Huawei, LG, Motorola and more, positioning themselves to come to market in the strongest and most innovative position possible.
Here we’ve rounded up the five most exciting pieces of mobile foldable hardware that we currently know about to possibly launch in 2019.

1. Samsung Galaxy X

The Samsung Galaxy X,  has been talked about for long enough to make it seem mythical, but there is evidence that a flexible device could very well be on the horizon. It was revealed in an official tease, and then reportedly receiving a release date in 2019, giving us hope that it probably might come to life in 2019. Samsung X is one of the most exciting of the incoming foldable phones. According to reports out of Korea, the X is extra interesting as it supposedly has three screens instead of two, essentially delivering a device that transitions from a phone to tablet.

Samsung has already proven it can create both curved and bendable screens, but a truly foldable one hasn’t been demonstrated in public. However, in 2014, Samsung did release a truly cringe-worthy video about a flexible phone and tablet concept which could probably mean the Samsung X could be the feature of Samsung Mobile.

A rumoured Specification was given for the Samsung X which includes a Super AMOLED Display, a 5-inches display that can be folded outwards, transforming the smartphone into a 7in miniature tablet. The rear of the device has a third 3.5-inch screen that allows it to be viewed even when folded down. This indicates that the device will work via a series of intricate hinges.

Samsung isn’t alone in testing foldable screen technology. Apple has reportedly procured a patent for a foldable smartphone in November last year. Motorola and LG have also been deemed forerunners in the unlikely quest for foldable phones. Samsung might just clinch the first major product, however. So what do we know about the Galaxy X? Keep reading to find out all the rumours, news and specs.

2. Apple foldable iPhone

1. Patents show a foldable iPhone concept with single bendable screen, rather than two different screens attached by a hinge.

The other mobile giant APPLE seems to be working producing a Foldable device, though it is stated to probably be out for 2020, however, the report stated that the hardware is almost ready which gives the probability that the phone altogether could appear at the MWC 2018.

In November last year, an Apple Inc-filed patent emerged for “Electronic Devices With Flexible Displays”, which specifically details an electronic device comprising “a flexible display in the housing having a bending region that bends about a bend axis”. The Patent also states that the flexible display technology could be utilised in “a cellular telephone”.

The Apple foldable phone could have two different bends “modes.” One mode would let the user open and close the phone like a book, and a second mode, for stationary use, would open the way a notepad does. In the latter scenario, one half of the phone could be used to prop up the other half of the phone so you could view its display on a flat table.

3. Motorola Razr

Courtesy of T3: T3 imageLike Reported earlier, It looks like Motorola is currently working on a folding phone, and all signs point to the fact that it could carry the iconic Motorola Razr branding.  If brought to market, this new handset would be in direct competition with the rumoured Samsung Galaxy X, folding iPhone and Huawei’s foldable phone.

Back in February 2017, Yang Yuanqing, the CEO of Lenovo (which owns the Motorola brand) noted while speaking to TechRadar that: “With the new technology, particularly foldable screens, I think you will see more and more innovation on our smartphone design. So hopefully what you just described [the Motorola Razr brand] will be developed or realised very soon”. It seems that old dead phones are coming back to life, just like the Nokia 3310 and 8110. Motorola Razr is an old model phone which the company plan to resurrect with a foldable screen.

The Motorola Razr originally came out in 2004, with a cool clamshell design and glowing keypad. It proved a massive hit, selling over 50 million units by July 2006. But by 2010, despite several Razr updates and reboots, tastes had changed as people moved to larger-screened phones such as the iPhone, which first launched in 2007, and ever since no other upgrade has come to the Razr.

The upcoming launch of foldable smartphones could make a Razr brand revival an even more tantalizing prospect, as it complements the original lineup’s core design.

Judging by the patent application, the 2019 Razr will feature a very new take on the iconic clamshell, with a large foldable touchscreen that, when folded, will be of similar size to a regular phone screen, but which opens out into a square-ish tablet. Imagine a new Razr with premium specs and foldable touchscreen display is quick appealing.

4. LG folding smartphone

LG Foldable Phone

LG is currently a leader in rolling, foldable displays, with not only the company showing off working examples (see above image), but LG Display screens even apparently being utilised by other brand’s folding devices, too (such as the Huawei folding phone).
This makes it unsurprising that in January this year LG filed a patent that shows off a “mobile phone with a flexible display which can be folded in half”, before detailing two different potential designs. One of the devices looks like two smartphones that were joined together at birth on one of the sides making the seemingly unpleasant bezels around the screen still visible. When folded, the screen disappears, you end up with a very narrow candy-bar shape. A second screen on the front shows information like the time and weather when it’s closed, and on the back is a camera module. The big circle near the bottom can only be the fingerprint sensor.

The second version is mostly the same, but a back panel moves to the side to reveal a small transparent section of the main display that’s used for notifications, time, date, etc.

The LG foldable phone, no matter which forms it comes in, looks like it will feature just two screens rather than the Samsung Galaxy X’s three.

5. Huawei folding phone

Lastly, is the folding phone that Huawei is working on. Last October, CEO of Huawei, Richard Yu, confirmed that the Chinese maker already had a working prototype of a flexible smartphone, and then in March, this year patent diagrams of a foldable Huawei phone emerged.

The patent refers to the device simply as “foldable smartphone”, but clearly shows a book-like phone that can be opened up to create a larger tablet, with a smart Surface Book 2-style hinge connecting each of the folder’s two screens.

Indeed it looks like solving that hinge design is the key to producing a successful foldable phone right now, whether or not it uses two or three screens. Any hinge would need to be as compact and invisible as possible to make the device a game changer, as the last thing anyone needs is some clunky PDA-style block stuck in their pocket.

The idea of carrying around both a high powered phone and tablet in one, though, is tantalising, and we hope that Samsung, Apple, Motorola, LG, or Huawei can deliver us we with best coming years.
