Samsung Galaxy Tab S6

The Tab S6 is a high-quality tablet aimed at people who need to be productive, as well as those who want an immersive media experience in a slate. It features an aluminum chassis, brilliant 10.5-inch AMOLED display, dual rear cameras, and most of the other bells and whistles we’re used to on top-grade hardware.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 out-performs its predecessor with a more powerful processor, optimized DeX mode and increased storage space. It also gets a new minimalistic design and updated S Pen stylus. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 is a great update to last year’s premium Android tablet but doesn’t make the case for ditching the iPad Pro, Surface Pro or other options.

To many a tablet is an entertainment device and to many it is a workstation. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 tablet features a 10.5 inches (26.67 cm) touchscreen for your daily needs and runs Android v9.0 (Pie) operating system to quickly open apps and games. The device is powered by a Octa core (2.84 GHz, Single core, Kryo 485 + 2.42 GHz, Tri core, Kryo 485 + 1.7 GHz, Quad core, Kryo 485) processor paired with 6 GB GB of RAM to further enhance the user’s experience.

DISPLAY & DESIGN

As far as the design and build quality are concerned, Samsung nailed it. The materials are excellent and the device is assembled tightly.

The star of the show is the 10.5-inch OLED HDR (HDR10 and HDR10+, but not Dolby Vision) display. This screen is really a treat to look at: colors pop, blacks are inky deep, and it gets bright enough to use outdoors. It’s an excellent screen for watching movies or YouTube videos, and it has enough resolution for text to look sharp at a comfortable viewing distance. It’s basically the same pixel density as the iPad Air or iPad Pro.

The display isn’t perfect, however, like the Galaxy S10, the Tab S6 has a fingerprint scanner embedded in the screen. Samsung is using an optical scanner here, as opposed to the ultrasonic one found in its phones. On top of being slow and unreliable, the scanner just doesn’t work at all when the blue light filter activates in the evening.

Other manufacturers that use similar optical scanners on their phones, such as OnePlus, force the screen to disable the blue light filter for the second it takes to scan the fingerprint, but Samsung hasn’t enabled that on the Tab S6.

The new tablet focuses on improving productivity and entertainment, with multitasking DeX mobile desktop software built in and a refined stylus Pen.

CAMERA

Taking the camera into consideration, the tablet has dual cameras of 13 MP, f/2.0, 26mm (wide), 1/3.4″, 1.0µm, AF and 5 MP, f/2.2, 12mm (ultrawide), 1.12µm. The front camera is incorporated with 8 MP, f/2.0, 26mm, 1/4.0″, 1.12µm. It also can record 4K UHD video at 30fps. The selfie camera has a 123-degree field of view for all-encompassing video calls.

KEYBOARD

You’ll find a full keyboard complete with number keys, arrow keys, and other buttons for interacting with the UI, such as search and toggling DeX on and off. I dig the trackpad, and dig that you can turn it off even more. I’m sure some will complain about the keyboard, but I found it worked well enough for writing emails, keeping up with Slack, and, yes, contributing to this review. The biggest issue: No backlight.

The keyboard costs #50,000 – #80,000, though you can snag it for half price if you order it bundled with the tablet from Samsung.

PERFORMANCE

Under the hood,  the tablet is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset supported by an 2.8Ghz Octa-core processor and Adreno 640 graphics card for the best gaming experience. To backup the performance is a 6GB of RAM and 128GB internal storage which can be expanded via the microSD card slot up to or 1TB of internal storage for multi-tasking.

The Tab S6 features the latest Android 9.0 (Pie) interface, as well as, a One UI desktop interface which puts a real taskbar at the bottom of the screen, and organizes apps like you’d sort files on a desktop. From top-left aligned by default with apps for Photos, Document and so forth which makes the tablet looks exactly like a PC desktop interface.

The Galaxy Tab S6 comes with support for the Google Assistant out of the box, which is particularly excellent news since it means Samsung’s choosing to not promote Bixby, its (not-as-good) personal assistant. In theory, the Google Assistant’s excellent voice recognition coupled with far-field microphone hardware means you should be able to shout at your tablet from across the room.

BATTERY

As for battery life, the 7,040mAh lithium-ion battery crushes it. The Tab S6 easily coasted through 12 hours of productivity, which is well more than a full work day. Moreover, it recharges relatively rapidly with the included 2A charger. It comes with fast USB type C charging and also carries support for POGO Charging Dock which is another way to charge the Tab.
