Nokia 9 Review
At the MWC 2019 HMD Global has just unveiled the Nokia 9 PureView, a smartphone with a whopping 5-camera array on the back. That’s a total of six cameras when you include the one on the front.
With the release of the premium Nokia 9 PureView, HMD is aiming for a seat towards the top of the camera charts alongside some of the best mobile phone devices out there. In a nutshell, the new Nokia 9 PureView is a commitment to a single idea.
This new device could be Nokia ticket at taking over and out running many flagship devices. The name Nokia 9 PureView here HMD refers to as “Art”, which is a process of refinement, removing all that is unwanted so, until you are left with something pure, yet powerful.
Design
The Nokia 9 PureView is distinguishable from other flagships on both sides. It is certainly an attractive smartphone with rounded corners and shape. The front display does not feature the trending edge-to-edge display feature, which means no notch, instead maintaining conservative bezels above and below.
Featuring an aluminum body, the Nokia 9 PureView is an elegant design, the 6000 aluminum makes up the core and frame of the phone, then fronted with Gorilla Glass front. Although, not like recent phones, the back of the Nokia 9 has curves in all the right places. The rear glass panel is also made of Gorilla Glass 5 and has tapered edges on all four sides of the glass.
At the bottom of the phone is a USB-C port, in-call mic and loudspeaker. The power key and volume rocker sits at the top right side of the phone.
Nokia 9 five cameras, plus a flash and ToF (time of flight) sensor, at the back of the smartphone was well arranged, for a wildly distinctive seven-hole radial pattern that looks a bit like the Blackberry logo looking very elegant and intriguing.
The Nokia 9 PueView measures 155 x 75 x 8mm and tips the scales at 172g, ensuring its presence in your hand. The curved rear glass does help it nestle in the palm. Nokia 9 Pureview is only made in one color for now called Midnight Blue.
Display
The Nokia 9 phone features a 5.99-inch display with QHD+ (1440×2960 pixels) resolution, though it was criticized for not following the trend of full view, edge-edge display. It comes with a POLED screen which also seems to be the norm for 2019 flagship devices with 18.5:9 aspect ratio and an in-display fingerprint sensor.
The P-OLED screen also known as the Plastic-OLED screen is simply the latest iteration technology. This LG designed pOLED is lighter weight, thinner, and easier to mold and shape than glass.
Nokia Pureview has a large 2K display resolution, It looked bright, clear and colorful during our hands on time with the phone, and it should be great for viewing the high-resolution photos taken by the multi-camera system.
There is an additional feature hiding under the display too, with a fingerprint scanner built into the screen. The Nokia 9 PureView comes with the commonly used optical reader, rather than the ultrasonic tech in the Samsung Galaxy S10, but it’s still good to see a hot flagship feature make its way into a Nokia.
Camera
This brings us to the best thing about the Nokia 9 phone. The five camera setup at the back of the phone is aimed at photography enthusiasts. And this phone is made perfectly for those who like to tune their RAW photos in post processing, like opening up shadows, bringing back highlights, and applying just the right amount of sharpening.
All the cameras lenses have the same fixed focal length of 28mm and are all 12MP each with f/1.8 aperture lenses, which work together to capture 60 megapixels of data for every image.
The middle and bottom center are RGB sensors, and the outer three are monochrome sensors. There’s also a Monochrome mode in the camera app that lets you shoot true black-and-white photographs, and it utilizes the three monochromatic sensors.
The Nokia 9 utilizes Zeiss optics, unsurprisingly, but the underlying technology is powered by Light. It’s the Light Lux Capacitor in the Snapdragon 845 that allows the Nokia 9 to capture and fuse these photos.
Every time you take a photo, the camera combines the image captured from each sensor to produce an image. The images from all five are all stacked to produce a single final image with a spectacular dynamic range and detailed information.
Live Bokeh Mode
The use of five cameras also means the Nokia 9 can capture a more detailed depth map up to 1,200 layers of depth data to be exact. This means more accurate bokeh or blur for all photos, especially with the built in Live Bokeh mode. You can adjust the intensity of the blur or refocus the photo through Google Photos.
The Nokia 9 also features a a 3D ToF camera at the back and it’s used to help in gathering depth mode data. It also allows you to use AR application such as virtual on-screen measurement tapes and such.
You also get Nokia’s Pro Camera UI which offers full manual controls as well. The camera app has also been updated for the Nokia 9 PureView, with HMD Global extending the range of the values (brightness, white balance, shutter speed etc) in response to user feedback.
Nokia 9 PureView is the right stepping stone towards the future of computational photography.
Front Camera
The Nokia also has a front facing 20MP F/1.8 camera. It supports Tetracell pixel binning so in low light situations it can combine four adjacent pixels into one producing 5MP images.
The front camera packs 20 megapixels, with facial-recognition technology powered by HMD’s proprietary artificial intelligence. Sadly it’s only for unlocking the phone and can’t be used to authenticate payments or access secure banking apps.
Software
Like many of Nokia’s smartphones, Nokia offers a clean build of Android which is one of the nice things about its phones. The Nokia 9 will come with Android One out of the box, meaning the phone runs on Android 9 Pie operating system.
The device also packs 6GB of RAM which indicates it will be better at Multi-tasking. You also get 128GB of internal storage, but no MicroSD card slot.
The Nokia PureView is also IP67 rated certified for water and dust resistance. There’s no headphone jack, so you’ll have to stick with USB-C earbuds or wireless headphones.
Hardware
Unfortunately, The Nokia 9 is powered by last year’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, though it could have been better. Why not the newer Snapdragon 855?. It also features an octa-core (4×2.8 GHz Kryo 385 Gold & 4×1.7 GHz Kryo 385 Silver) CPU coupled with a Adreno 630 graphic for proper and effective performance.
Battery
The Nokia 9 PureView’s is powered by a 3,320mAh battery which should be enough for a full day’s usage. Though, the five-lens images will significantly drain the battery, however, if so, the wireless charging may come in handy to juice it back up during the day for better users experience.
