Lenovo has just added a new upgrade to Lenovo Legion Y740, a member of its Legion line of gaming laptops. When it comes to gaming and high-performance laptops, the Lenovo Legion Y740 9th generation laptop announced in April this year, is still the latest. However, thanks to the newly added CPUs added to the newly launched upgrade, it enables it to carry the mantle.

The Lenovo Legion Y740 is a strong contender among gaming laptops. It offers blazing fast performance, even with graphics hungry games, and couples it with a beautiful and bright 1080p display. It comes featuring a G-Sync display, per-key RGB backlit keyboard, and the latest CPU and GPU tech from Intel and Nvidia respectively.

Lenovo Legion Y740 design

This new model of the Legion Y740 looks identical to the one which were originally unveiled during CES this year. The Laptop sports an all-aluminium chassis feels very durable and sturdy. It has been noticed that Lenovo is aiming toward branding its “Legion” model a gaming Laptop. Thus, the strong built of the laptop to withstand heavy task.

The Legion Y740 come with RGB lighting which illuminates not just the keyboard but the air vents and the Y sitting on the O of Legion on the lid. Lenovo Legion Y740 surfaces feel thinner and more flexible than many competing 17-inch gaming laptops including the Asus ROG GL704, Razer Blade Pro. Although, the laptop has some pretty sizeable bezels all around its display,it is still maintain its sleek and slim lid.

Display

Lenovo Legion Y740 17″ has a Full HD 144Hz IPS panel, made by LG. Its diagonal is 17.3″ (43.94 cm), and the resolution 1920 х 1080 pixels. The screen ratio is 16:9, and we are looking at a pixel density of – 127 ppi, and a pitch of 0.2 х 0.2 mm. The screen turns into Retina when viewed at distance equal to or greater than 69cm (27″) (from this distance one’s eye stops differentiating the separate pixels, and it is normal for looking at a laptop). The viewing angles are excellent with offer images at 45° to evaluate image quality

The FHD 1080p display is crisp, detailed, with nice, if a bit muted, color reproduction. It can get bright too, producing up to 500 nits. The screen is also equipped with a 144Hz refresh rate, Nvidia G-Sync, limiting screen tearing and finally a Dolby Vision’s software enabled HDR. Thus, the system automatically bumps the brightness up to 100 percent when HDR or Dolby Vision content is being played.

Lenovo also puts some attention into their thermal system, called “Legion Cold Front”, which is a dual channel thermal system with 4 vents, a dedicated heat sink for the keyboard and individual CPU and GPU cooling.

Ports

As with the latest Lenovo Legion laptops, the Legion Y740 17″ has most of its I/O placed on the backside. This includes the charging port, a USB Type-A 3.1 (Gen. 1) port, an RJ-45 connector, followed by a USB Type-A 3.1 (Gen. 2) port, an HDMI connector, and a DisplayPort. On the left and right side, respectively, are located a USB Type-C Thunderbolt 3 port and a USB Type-A 3.1 (Gen. 1) port.

Keyboard/ Trackpad

Due to the narrow bezels, Lenovo has had to place the webcam below the display, which results in a very awkward perspective when video chatting.

The Keyboard is quite comfortable for the best typing experience at workplace and home. The keys are large and have generous spacing. And the back-lighting allowed me to burn the midnight oil without too many errors. Lenovo is flaunting the best keyboard for a gaming laptop with spacious areas. The keys are comfortable with a slight rubberized feel for grip.

Legion Y740 17 keyboard has been shifted a bit towards the right due to an extra column of shortcut keys, but we got used to this. The keys are flat but comfortable to type on and are very silent. Legion Y740 17 RGB keyboard lighting is beautiful and highly customizable through the Corsair iCue software

Lenovo introduced an extra buttons on the laptop this includes a direct shortcut to the Lenovo Vantage app; one to start screen recording through Xbox Game Bar; two customisable macro keys; and two dedicated buttons for adjusting the level of keyboard backlighting. The trackpad also works well and offers smooth tracking. There are even individual physical trackpad buttons.
