How To Setup An IP Camera for Remote Viewing.

IP Camera for Remote Viewing

Step 1: Connect your camera to a router

The first steps to take in order to be able to view your property remotely is connect your camera to a router with Internet access. This router has a LAN port which connects the router to the camera through the Ethernet cable. You can also connect your camera wirelessly via a WiFi router.

Step 2: Find your camera IP address.

IP camera address is the key to remote viewing as it allows you to access the cameras Web Interface. Similarly, IP address allows you to connect and access the right camera amidst a whole lot of cameras and electronics devices around you. There are of course different ways to to find your IP address.

Typically, a security camera has a software page from where you can see your IP address. In addition, you can also find your camera IP address easier if you are connected with a router, since it is DHCP enabled.

Step 3: Reserve IP address

After accessing your IP address you should reserve that IP address in your DHCP Server box. To reserve your IP address click on the browser icon in the device list to access the internet since you are already connected to a router. Enter the default user credentials to view your camera.

The default username for new camera is admin same as the password. Click on the NET tab to access the network configuration page. Since you have already gotten your IP address, to reserve it you need to uncheck the DHCP box to disable it then save. Hence, when there is power interruption or network reboot the same IP will always be assigned.

Step 4: Check the WAN IP address of your router.

Wide-area network (WAN IP) is the IP address assigned to the Internet-facing (public-facing) side of a network by the network administrator in a large enterprise or by an ISP. There are different sites that helps in finding your Wan IP address. These includes; ShowMyIPAddress.com, whatismyip.com, whatismyipaddress.com, wanip.info and more.

It is important to know that eternal WAN IP changes from time to time, hence, there is the need to order for a static IP from your service provider to set up a DDNS Account Setup. Once the DDNS has been setup, you will need to create an hostname instead of your IP address to access your IP camera remotely.

Through the WAN IP address you can connect all necessary devices at any location to your router.

Step 5: Setup Port Forwarding / Network Setup.

Port forwarding is what makes accessing your camera remotely over the Internet possible. It is used by computers on the Internet to connect to a specific device on your internal network. Every port on your router is like a special pipe made for a specific kind of traffic, hence, there is the need to set up port forwarding.

To setup port forwarding, login to your camera’s admin interface and go to the network settings area where you can confirm what port has been assigned to your camera, so as to know the port to forward your router to. Then log in to your router to locate the port forwarding options. Although, some router gives this option different name like Port Forwarding, Port Triggering, Applications & Gaming, or Port Range Forwarding but it serves the same functions.

After access to the option, type the port number you want to forward in the box provided, alongside your static IP address and enable the status. Then make sure a firewall programme is not blocking the port you are forwarding.

Step 6 : Test Access.

The final step to take is to test your configuration. You can do this by connecting to a web browser or your mobile phone as long as its not the same network your camera is connected to. Then enter the URL address of your connection which is the combination of your WAN IP address and the HTTP or camera port.

Explained above is one way to remotely view your IP camera. There are some camera manufacturers that makes remote viewing easier by creating an APP and client for easy access.

The first step is to download the manufacturer’s App and Client. Since these apps are built by the camera manufacturer there is no  compatibility issues. This app uses P2P Technology which allows users to access the security camera using the internet remotely.

Once the app is launched, there is a need for you to enter your unique ID number (UID) in order to add the camera device. Then click on your camera name on the app or client tab to view your IP camera over the Internet at any location. One of the advantages of this app is that you can also access your security camera through more than one device.

In conclusion, IP Cameras are a versatile security solution, requiring nothing more than a network connection. Now, it is easy to remotely access a your camera with your IP address, and Port number.
