In its special event on September 9, 2014, Apple announced the launch of its two latest smartphones, the iPhone 6 and its bigger sibling, the iPhone 6 Plus. Both devices came with larger screens, a completely new iPad-style ultra-slim design, faster processors, better cameras, and Apple’s new Apple Pay payment system.

In this post, we’ll be reviewing the Apple iPhone 6. If you’ve always wanted to know more about iPhone 6 to decide whether to buy it or not, this brief post will give you all the information you need to make a well-informed decision.

Now, let’s roll into the world of Apple’s new iPhone 6.

Design

If there’s any aspect Apple never disappoints in, it’s design. The iPhone 6’s full glass and aluminium construction makes it one of the most gorgeous smartphones ever made. If you’ve loved the design of previous Apple smartphones, then you’ll love the iPhone 6 even more.

Some of the buttons and switches have been moved or redesigned due to the increased size. The round volume buttons have been replaced with long metal ovals, while the sleep/wake button has been moved from the top to the right side. This will save you from having to stretch your finger to the top of the device to get it “asleep” and “awake”.

The iPhone 6 is 6.9mm thick—and that’s just ultra slim! It’s so slim that the device had to incorporate an unorthodox antenna design. In addition, the camera assembly couldn’t fit into the thin frame, so Apple allowed the camera lens to bulge out a bit. But we think both issues are quite forgivable.

Overall, Apple over-delivered on the design, and the feel, fit, and finish are unmatched.

Display

The 4.7-inch display explains why the iPhone 6 had to be slightly bigger than its predecessors. The display has a resolution of 1334 x 750 pixels, which actually means the same 326ppi pixel density as the iPhone 5s. However, Apple has called the new retina screen “Retina HD”. We really don’t know what that means, but we’re sure it would be a great plus to the iPhone 6’s display.

Although the iPhone 6’s 326ppi pixel density isn’t the best in the market at the moment, the display is bright and crisp, and the content appears as though it’s stuck on the glass rather than under it. And that’s awesomely amazing! The viewing angles and contrast ratio are greatly improved as well.

Performance and memory

The Apple iPhone 6 runs on the new Apple iOS 8, which was announced just two days before the phone’s launch. The device packs Apple’s new 64-bit, 1.2GHz A8 processor, which is even more powerful than the A7 processor featured in the iPhone 5s. In terms of performance, the processor matches well with those of other top-rated smartphones in the market at the moment.

The A8 processor is “assisted” by a new version of the M7 co-processor, called the M8. It determines when you’re walking, cycling, and running. It also estimates distance and elevation. So, in case you’re wondering, the iPhone 6’s ability to detect it when you’re running up the stairs is due to the barometer sensor in the M8.

Though disappointing it might be that the iPhone 6 packs 1GB or RAM, as with its predecessors, the efficiency of the A8-M8 processor combo makes the 1GB of RAM sufficient to make the iPhone 6 one of the fastest smartphones ever made.

As for storage capacity, the device comes in 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB variants. There’s no 32GB model.

Camera

The iPhone 6 cameras have been improved, though the specs are not suggestive of this fact. The rear camera is still 8MP, but it still has a True Tone dual-LED flash. Its aperture is still f/2.2, and the pixels are still bigger at 1.5 microns.

According to Apple, the sensor is all new, and the iPhone 6 can make even better photographs due to the new autofocus, advanced face detection, and digital image stabilization.

The front-facing FaceTime HD camera also has a new sensor, a better aperture, and it makes better low-light photographs.

Battery

As with previous Apple smartphones, you can’t still see the iPhone 6’s 1,810mAH battery because it’s non-removable. The device has a 3G talk time of 14 hours and HD video playback time of 11 hours. If you ask us, we’d say that’s not spectacular, but it’s not crappy, either.
